The 2014 Clearwater's Great Hudson River Revival, honoring Clearwater Co-founders, Pete & Toshi Seeger, has a special significance due to the passing of Pete Seeger in January and Toshi Seeger last July. Pete was 94 when he died, an age which for most would mean quiet retirement. Pete, though, kept busy until the very end with his music, social and environmental activism. Toshi, Pete's life-long partner of 70 years passed away at the age of 93 in 2013, she, too, a ferocious activist to the end. When Toshi died in 2013, a New York Times article called her a "driving force" Pete was quoted as saying: "She was the brains of the family."
Waterkeeper Alliance Board member, Karl S. Coplan, noted on the passing of Pete Seeger: "It may be a hyperbole to say that there would be no environmental laws without Pete Seeger, but the world-famous musician and activist, who died at age 94 in New York City on January 27th, played a huge role in galvanizing the environmental movement. His great gift was the power of song – not just as performance, but also as political participation."
Pete Seeger is a Legend with a Capital L. He is an American Icon with a capital I. He sang in protest to support the labor movement in the 1940s, defied the House Un-American Activities Committee and the scourge of McCarthyism in the 1950s, created the Civil Rights anthem of the 1960s, “We Shall Overcome”, and marched along side Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King. His songs such as "Turn, Turn, Turn", were a major inspiration with profound impact throughout the Anti-war movement during the Vietnam War Era. He influenced and guided a generation of remarkable musicians including Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Neil Young, Bruce Springsteen, Richie Havens, Emily Lou Harris, Dave Matthews, Eddie Vedder, Judy Collins, Steve Earle and Arlo Guthrie. His 90th birthday party, a sold out concert at Madison Square Garden, attracted many of these same artists to not only celebrate the man, but also, of course, support his environmental advocacy organization, Clearwater.
Inspired by Pete Seeger’s desire to clean up the toxic pollution and infuse life back into a "dead" Hudson River, Clearwater’s Great Hudson River Revival initially helped raise funds to build the sloop, Clearwater. The sea-worthy vessel has since become a world-renowned floating classroom and a symbol of effective grassroots action. Since the 1960s, the Clearwater Festival has grown into the country’s largest annual environmental celebration, attracting thousands of people of all ages to the shores of the Hudson River. The event features seven sustainably-powered stages with diverse music, dance, storytelling and family-oriented programming, a Green Living Expo and boat rides.
