Petition of the Week: Stoning gay people and women to death is legal WHERE?!?!
The Sultan of Brunei, Hassanal Bolkiah, has announced the imposition of a new Taliban-like penal code in the country. The proposed law, which takes effect in stages that began on May 1, includes the stoning to death of gay men and lesbians and the public flogging of women who have abortions.
The Sultan of Sin owns a bunch of swanky hotels around the world including the Beverly Hills Hote, the Bel-Air Hotel and the Dorchester Collection Properties. Jay Leno, Ellen De Generes, Richard Branson of Virgin Group, and more are supporting a global boycott of the Sultan’s hotels.
The Feminist Majority Foundation (FMF), an L.A. based women’s rights organization, is pulling its annual Global Women’s Rights Awards from the Beverly Hills Hotel. The FMF has joined forces with the LGBT community and the international community in protest and has launched a massive social media petition entitled #Stop The Sultan, calling on the Sultan of Brunei, Hassanal Bolkiah, and his government to rescind the new code.
